NVIDIA upgraded its NeRF photogrammetry service to include new virtual reality (VR) content creation tools this Tuesday.

The update allows NeRF users to create a VR environment from a series of 2D photos. The service also leverages AI to instantly create virtual scenes and fill in any gaps a user’s 2D source images may have missed.

According to NVIDIA, the upgraded NeRF service allows users to create a VR scene with increased time and financial efficiency.

After users convert their source 2D images, they can import them as a rendered immersive environment in a real-time 3D (RT3D) engine.

Users can now enter a NeRF-rendered space via a VR headset, presenting “use cases across industries.” NVIDIA also forecasts that NeRF is a suitable digital twin solution for many verticals, such as property management, retail, and eCommerce.

More on NeRF

In April, NVIDIA unveiled Instant Neural Radiance Fields (Instant NeRF); the firm originally touted the product as a tool for converting 2D images into RT3D digital assets – not just VR content.

Using AI and machine learning (ML) networks, NVIDIA’s photogrammetry solution accurately simulates a subject’s details, lighting, and shadows. The sophisticated RT3D conversion tool also uses AI to complete RT3D scans and enable an accessible route for highly realistic digital twins of people, places, and objects.

With additional integration for NVIDIA Omniverse applications, the platform enables developers to quickly create and place their captured assets into an XR immersive environment or another RT3D production pipeline.

According to NVIDIA, automotive, robotics, manufacturing, architecture, and entertainment industries can all benefit from NeRF. Developers with varied skill levels can use NVIDIA’s service to create RT3D assets, thanks to the solution’s general availability, learning resources, and integration across other applications.

For example, using the company’s NVIDIA DRIVE solution, businesses can use Instant NeRF to teach robots and self-driving cars how to navigate real-world environments.

NVIDIA also provides a smartphone sister application that developers can use as an easy-to-use tool that speeds up XR content development pipelines.
