Legendary Disney Animator Draws ‘The Little Mermaid’ Live In VR On The Late Late Show

I’m not crying. There’s just something in my eye.

Late night television appears to be developing a fondness for Tilt Brush. The popular VR painting app has already seen multiple appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in the form of a Pictionary-esque party game with participants including stars such as Scarlett Johansson and SNL’s Michael Che.

Now the immersive virtual art tool has returned to late night yet again in a segment that should leave any dedicated Disney fan on the verge of tears.

During a recent aired episode, legendary Disney animator Greg Keane stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden to perform a live Tilt Brush rendition of one of his most famous characters, Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Of course it wouldn’t be a Disney performance without the music, set to the song “Part of Your World” from the animated film. So, yeah, there were definitely some watery eyes in the audience that night. But definitely not from me. No sir…

Keane was joined by NBA legend Kobe Bryant that evening in support of their previous collaboration, Dear Basketball, an animated short film which is currently on the shortlist for an Oscar for “Best Animated Short.” The duo has a good shot at it too. Keane is an animation veteran who’s responsible for the design of memorable characters such as Pocahontas, Aladdin, the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan and of course the Little Mermaid. Combine this with Kobe Bryant’s overall star power and you have a project that’s as well-made as it is well-promoted.

Hopefully this kind of publicity from such a big name in animation shines a larger spotlight on Tilt Brush from within the professional community. We’ve already seen the kind of emotional rollercoasters capable of being produced in Tilt Brush with projects such as Dear Angelica. I can only imagine the level of production that would come from an official Disney Tilt Brush animation. Are you listening Disney!? I need a VR Tangled film!
