‘Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time’ Now Fully Playable In VR

A new mod brings the classic Nintendo 64 action-adventure game to PC VR headsets.

One of the most iconic video games of all time is now fully playable in VR thanks to a new mod by BrianMp16. This isn’t some 20-minute tech demo; you can play through the entirety of the legendary campaign from start to finish, all from an immersive first-person perspective.

Based on videos provided by BrianMp16, the VR mod appears to support 6DoF head-tracking and at least some degree of motion controls. Throughout his gameplay videos, the creator can be seen interacting with in-game objects and fighting enemies by swinging his Valve Index controllers. In order to move, BrianMp16 uses an omnidirectional treadmill to physically shuffle throughout his virtual environment.

“I have finished making a fully playable Ocarina of Time VR game that builds off of Kaze’s first-person mod of the original game,” said BrianMp16 in a Reddit comment, adding, “It can be played for free, no strings attached, on a Dolphin VR emulator right now! I adapted and created a handful of Action Replay codes to significantly improve the VR experience. Draw distance is extended, culling range is reduced, the HUD is removed, and most importantly the FPS is increased to 30fps and upscaled to 90fps. Additionally, I adapted an OoT UHD texture pack and made it compatible with Dolphin VR.”

Ocarina of Time is just the latest gaming classic to receive the VR treatment. Earlier this week Oculus Studios launched Resident Evil 4 VR on Oculus Quest 2 headsets, offering players a fast-paced horror-action experience expertly ported to VR. Before that, we saw both official and unofficial VR releases of popular games like Minecraft, SUPERHOT, and Grand Theft Auto just to name a few.

Personally, I’m loving the idea of more VR ports of classic video games. Don’t get me wrong, Resident Evil and The Legend of Zelda are an excellent start, but what about memorable titles like Gears of Wars, GoldenEye, Metal Gear Solid, or Silent Hill? With the right amount of tinkering, any of these classic games could make for incredible VR experiences.
