Parallel parking may soon be a thing of the past. Augmented reality (AR) technology is poised to change the way we drive, whether it be next-gen windshields that project turn-by-turn directions and safety hazards over the real world or virtual dashboards only visible using AR glasses. Today we learned of yet another interesting use case: AR-assisted parking.

ARPost typically reports on the Finnish XR company’s groundbreaking hardware and software developments, but the company also helps develop and distribute XR experiences and solutions ranging from operas to flight simulations. An Opera Produced Entirely Through XR The Finnish National Opera and Ballet (FNOB) spent two years producing Turandot opera with Sweden’s Malmö Opera.

It’s the 300th edition of my XR Week Peek. A lot of time has passed by, and I can’t even recall all the countless days I’ve spent reading news about XR and then summarizing them at the end of the week. It’s been a lot of effort, that required me a lot of discipline every week: every month it becomes more difficult to keep this column alive because my workload is increasing, but until now I managed to pressure myself to fulfill my duty every week.

Meta has introduced the Segment Anything Model, which aims to set a new bar for computer-vision-based ‘object segmentation’—the ability for computers to understand the difference between individual objects in an image or video. A new Egyptian-themed DLC course is coming to Walkabout Mini Golf on April 20. A tweet from the Walkabout account revealed the new course, called ‘Temple at Zerzura’: The ultimate sand trap—the Sahara Desert—recedes after a thousand years, revealing a mini golf course fit for an Egyptian king and queen! Putt through the dunes, vast throne room, and great pyramids as you search for clues and lost balls within the forgotten temple.

Propagation: Paradise Hotel will release May 4 for Meta Quest and SteamVR. Developers WanadevStudio unveiled the date alongside a new cinematic trailer, embedded below. We first heard about the survival horror game over a year ago, announced as a sequel to Propagation VR at the Upload VR Showcase in December 2021. We got our first look at gameplay in the middle of last year, with the game initially set for release on Quest 2 in late 2022.

We have our first full month of PlayStation Store chart rankings for PSVR 2, with Pavlov taking out the top spot for the month. Each month, the PlayStation blog posts a ranking of the top downloads for the PlayStation Store across each platform. Sony released PlayStation VR2 back in February, so it’s now included in the rankings and with March done and dusted, we have our first full month of download rankings for the new headset.

A new mod turns the popular VR game into a flatscreen experience. Despite having been released in 2020, Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx remains one of the best single-player experiences available on PC VR headsets. And while the expertly-crafted first-person shooter was built from the ground up for VR, that hasn’t stopped one group of modders from turning the immersive game into a flatscreen experience.

Amid Evil, which initially released four years ago on PC, is coming to VR platforms later this month. Boasting a diverse arsenal of weapons and responsive movement, it’s a great homage to classic boomer shooters, like Heretic, Unreal Tournament, Quake and DOOM. From its environments to its guns to its art style, Amid Evil screams classic shooter. Based on my initial impressions from a 15-minute demo at PAX East, those highlights translate into VR very well.
