At GDC this year, SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) showed a couple of new eye tracking demos at Valve’s booth. They added eye tracking to avatars in the social VR experiences of Pluto VR and Rec Room , which provided an amazing boost to the social presence within these experience. There are so many subtle body language cues that are communicated non-verbally through the someone else’s eye contact, gaze position, or even blinking.

Every now and then a game comes along that marries genres together in such a way that it just makes perfect sense. When the premise for The Persistence was described to me, I found myself wondering why it hadn’t been made sooner. Essentially, you take control of a passenger on a starship that’s awoken from sleep after all of the previous crew was either murdered or transformed into a hideous monster.

This week, both the grid and the company behind it has officially shut down after a long outage and a series of financial hits. The grid’s regions and user inventories are saved, but residents will lose any money they had in in-world currency, owner Melanie Thielker confirmed today.

Last year, production studio The Rogue Initiative attracted enough attention with their team’s talent to iron out a partnership with popular filmmaker Michael Bay for a series of VR content with Hollywood cinematic style. Qualcomm has debuted an updated version of their VR Headset Reference Design now with Leap Motion’s new 180-degree hand-tracking to bring gesture control to mobile VR headsets. The new headset and Leap Motion tracking module was shown off during last week’s GDC 2017. Qualcomm’s VR Headset Reference Design has been upgraded to the company’s new Snapdragon 835 mobile platform.

I don’t remember when it happened exactly, but at some point in my 10-15 minute cooperative multiplayer demo for Farpoint, I forgot I was holding a little plastic toy gun in my hands. AirMech Command is one of VR’s best strategy games and it finally makes its way over to the Vive, as well as the suspenseful horror thriller, Dreadhalls.
