The 9 Biggest VR Stories Of GDC 2017

UploadVR Between Realities podcast

Whew, what a week. Can we sleep now? With each passing year the Game Developers Conference (GDC) becomes more and more important to the VR industry, and 2017’s iteration was no different. There have been a frankly ridiculous amount of announcements over the past six days and we wouldn’t blame you if you’d missed a few of them. So we’ve gathered what we’d consider to be the nine biggest stories of the show, representing the need-to-know information.

Hands-on: ‘Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul’ is Poised to Become VR’s Next Big Frightener

Road to VR

Jump scares are universally hated by horror film and game enthusiasts alike for being ‘cheap thrills’, and are oft considered the low-hanging fruit of the genre. Suspense and existential dread however are much harder to manufacture in a horror game, and from what I’ve seen at this year’s GDC, Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul has it in spades.

Groceries in the 2040s Is A VR Short Film Made In Oculus Quill

UploadVR Between Realities podcast

Oculus isn’t the only one using its Quill tool to make movies, though Groceries in the 2040s is a little different to the company’s Dear Angelica. For starters, this new film from Adam Dylewski is viewed through YouTube, not inside your VR headset. You may remember Dylewski made a similar project on the future of music using Google’s Tilt Brush earlier this year.

The Future of eLearning in 2022: A Sensitive Eye for Authentic Translation and Localization

Speaker: Chris Paxton McMillin, President of D3 Training Solutions

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.

GDC 2017: Paranormal Activity VR Won’t Scare You The Same Way Twice, Learns Your Fears

UploadVR Between Realities podcast

Last year at GDC, I saw someone rip off their Vive headset and throw it across an entire demo booth. She was cowering in fear, on the verge of tears, ready to run out of the Moscone Convention Center. This year at GDC the responses weren’t as extreme because the demo was far more reserved, but the quality of the immersion and atmosphere still rang true.

This VR Surgery Demo Had The Most Disgustingly Realistic Haptics I’ve Felt

UploadVR Between Realities podcast

Like many people, I’m not great with needles. Just looking at them sends a shiver coursing through my body, and I find myself instinctively backing away. Once you’ve had your first injection, that thin, precise pinpoint of pain sticks in your mind and it’s hard to forget. It was with some bravery, then, that I picked up a syringe and used it in VR.

Created by Stress Level Zero , developers of multiplayer shooter Hover Junkers (2016), Duck Season is something, that’s for sure. Part shooting game, part theater piece, part exploration experience, Duck Season defies the genre pigeonholing that would make this article easier to write.

Much more evidence all around us. What can we do in our corporate organizations, in our homes and communities, to change the current course?
