Xbox, Roblox, and New York Liberty create gaming-inspired court for WNBA

Xbox collaborated with Roblox and WNBA team New York Liberty to create the WNBA’s first gaming-inspired basketball court at Barclays Center. The court was constructed at Barclays Center and inside Roblox for the New York Liberty’s August 2 and August 3 home games against the Los Angeles Sparks.

In addition to being the first video game-inspired court for the WNBA, the Xbox and Roblox-themed court is also the first secondary court among the current teams. While we don’t know if the court will be there temporarily or permanently, Xbox and Roblox integrated it into Dunking Simulator with features like fireworks, fan chants, and pyrotechnics. It even includes guidance from 11-year-old sports journalist and broadcaster, Pepper Persley.

Those who play on the Xbox basketball court in Dunking Simulator will be able to score some virtual gear for their avatars to wear and show off to other players, including the New York Liberty jersey, an Xbox belt bag, and Xbox shutter shades. These items are not exclusive to Dunking Simulator, as they can be unlocked in other Roblox games.

To commemorate the announcement of the Xbox-themed basketball court, Microsoft will also donate $10 to the Mamba and Mambacit Foundation and Girls Who Code for every dream submission to the Power Her Dreams website.

The integration of the Xbox-themed basketball court into Roblox is one of the WNBA’s first independent attempts at highlighting its teams in a metaverse game. Hopefully, designing the court in the real world and in-game will inspire Roblox players, regardless of gender, to watch more WNBA games.

Microsoft's Bethesda acquisition will bring exclusives like Starfield and the potential addition of all Activision Blizzard games would further bolster that list, but the console's real strength lies in third-party support.

It's been a busy few weeks for console war soldiers.

Tensions spiked last month when "Nate the Hate," an industry insider with a decent track record, claimed that Hi-Fi Rush was headed to Nintendo Switch. The rumor sparked some mixed feelings among Xbox fans, some of whom expressed dismay over one of the console's system-selling exclusives coming to another platform. Other reports at the time claimed that Rare's Sea of Thieves could also be bound for PlayStation and Switch. That rising anger came to a head this weekend when XboxEra reported that Xbox is planning to launch its biggest exclusive, Starfield, on PS5.

It's going to be a busy year for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The subscription service is expected to get an influx of high-profile games in 2024. Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 and Avowed are leading the charge, and there's a good chance that we'll see a lot of Activision Blizzard games on the service soon. What's always more exciting to me, though, are the games I've never heard of. Some of my favorite Game Pass titles over the year have been left-field indies that I learned about the very day they launched. Call them pleasant surprises.

Xbox Game Pass is already getting one of those games this week. Go Mecha Ball is a new roguelike, twin-stick shooter hybrid that launches on January 25 for both PC and Xbox Game Pass. It's a wildly creative little action game that makes it the kind of Game Pass curiosity that keeps me subscribed to the service.
