Insta360 is about to reveal … exactly what?

Insta360 is on the verge of unveiling a new product, but a promotional video released just ahead of Tuesday’s event is giving little away.

The 20-second video (below), titled Elevate Your Creativity,  shows point-of-view footage that heads rapidly toward the ground and straight into a hand that’s held aloft in apparent anticipation of receiving whatever it is that’s coming toward it. And that’s pretty much it.

Current suggestions for Insta360’s new device include everything from a drone to a drone attachment to an action camera. Entering the drone market would seem like a high-risk move considering how DJI is pretty much dominating it right now, so some kind of attachment for an existing drone seems more likely. Whether Insta360 has done a deal with DJI or another drone maker, or if it’s going it alone with the new device, remains to be seen.

Whatever it is, it’s clearly designed for aerial photography, but beyond that, we’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out what exactly Insta360 has come up with.

China-based Insta360 has been steadily making a name for itself in the action- and 360-degree-camera market since its launch in 2015.

A couple of months ago, Digital Trends reviewed the most recent addition to Insta360’s lineup, the ONE RS. The setup impressed on a lot of levels, with notable features including its modular design, excellent software and app integration, and attractive price tag. The Twin Edition, for example, includes a 4K lens and a 5.7K 360 lens for a reasonable $550.

Part of what makes the Insta360 One R an adaptive camera, beside the modular design, are the updates -- and the company is making good on that promise with a list of new updates it has launched. The modular action camera now uses artificial intelligence to create HDR-like photos, uses a higher bit rate for more detail, offers a new webcam mode, and can stream live videos in 360.

PureShot is a new stills mode for the modular camera that uses A.I. to increase the dynamic range of photos while reducing noise in low light. Insta360 says the mode offers a result similar to using auto exposure bracketing to combine shots in post, but is done in-camera with one tap.

The world of immersive imaging looks like it is finally figuring itself out. The Vecnos Iqui is the latest 360-degree camera to focus on reframing spherical content into a traditional fixed-frame window. Where cameras like the Rylo, Insta360 One X, and GoPro Max applied this idea to video, the Iqui does it for 360 still photos, as well.

The Iqui is the first product from Vecnos, a new company spun off from Ricoh. Ricoh was a pioneer in 360 imaging with its Theta cameras, so the Iqui has a strong history in the segment behind its development. But it is completely different from any other 360 camera, Theta or otherwise, and uses an innovative design with four lenses. It sounds counterintuitive, but compared to the usual dual-lens design, this is actually what enables the Iqui's slim, pen-like shape.
