Corals dive into virtual reality. Most of us will never experience diving underwater in a submarine to study the deep sea. But thanks to 3D imaging and virtual reality, we can now get a digitized, 360-degree look at life deep underwater. Marine biologists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) are scanning underwater objects, including corals, rocks, and wreckage, with a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV).

Despite some reports last year suggesting that Microsoft may have discontinued HoloLens, the company has affirmed its work on a new version of the AR headset. Back in July of 2017, HoloLens’ Director of Science, Marc Pollefeys, wrote that the company was working on a new version of HoloLens’ so-called “HPU” (holographic processing unit) chip, which is the nerve center for the headset’s many external sensors.

Asus was among a handful of Microsoft partners who planned to launch a VR headset as part of Microsoft’s “Mixed Reality” platform. While those other headsets became available late last year, Asus’ own Windows VR headset is finally launching today. Aside from Samsung’s Odyssey headset, the Windows VR headsets are largely based on the same design, with few differences beyond cosmetics and ergonomics.
