Last week saw the XR Safety Initiative’s third annual Metaverse Safety Week (formerly known as XR Safety Week). As ever, the week started on International Human Rights Day, December 10, and was followed by five days packed full of panels and talks, with each day having a different theme relating to safety in immersive environments. Adobe’s VR modeling tool, Substance 3D Modeler , is now available on Steam, bringing with it support for Valve’s Index headset and possibly others. Adobe released 3D Modeler as part of its ‘Substance’ suite of applications last year. The application supports VR and non-VR modes. In VR, users can intuitively ‘sculpt’ 3D models to their liking, then pull them into the 2D mode for refinements and use with the rest of the Substance suite (or vice versa).

Diver-X, the Japan-based startup known for pitching an ambitious VR headset earlier this year, is at it again, this time with a pair of VR gloves that incorporates a membrane capable of flexing and compressing to replicate the sensation of touch. The original HalfDive headset campaign on Kickstarter managed to secure enough cash to be considered fully funded back in January 2022, although the team decided to cancel the campaign and return the funds to backers.

nDreams, the VR studio and publisher behind titles such as Fracked (2021) and Phantom: Covert Ops (2020), today announced it’s acquired long-time partner studio Near Light. This marks the first such studio acquisition by nDreams, which follows a $35 million investment round secured back in March 2022. OpenSim added 2,061 active users users this past month, hitting a new record high of 47,169 unique monthly users. Some of the increase could be due to the recently-concluded OpenSimulator Community Conference , or due to the fact that people are home from work or school for the holidays, and have time to go into virtual worlds. The public OpenSim grids now have a total of 102,917 standard-sized regions in virtual land area.

Substance 3D Modeler 2023 is now available on Steam. The software lets you sculpt and export your creation as a 3D model. You can switch between VR and desktop modes at any time. It began its life as the VR-only Oculus Medium, which Adobe acquired from Facebook in 2019. We first tried Medium in 2015 , and declared the experience “the future of creativity”.

NDreams announced it acquired long-term development partner Near Light, marking the publisher’s first acquisition in nearly 16 years. Bought for an undisclosed sum, Near Light joins existing nDreams teams split between remote positions as well as offices in Farnsborough and Brighton. Near Light was co-founded by Paul Mottram and Ben Hebb in 2016.
