In part 1 I addressed the technical reasons why Ready Player One – customer and user’s expectations – is still years away. But the unrealistic expectations of the public regarding the metaverse involve another field. As co-owner of a small VR company, I find myself quite often obliged to disappoint people that think the metaverse and immersive technologies are cheap.

In an effort to harden the security of its hardware products, Meta today announced new guidelines for its Bug Bounty program, specifying the inclusion of both the Quest Pro headset and Touch Pro controllers, and what the company will pay out for specific bugs uncovered by security researchers. Like some other tech companies, Meta runs a Bug Bounty program which encourages hackers security researchers to probe its products for vulnerabilities in exchange for a payout.

Spatial Ops is a new multiplayer mixed reality shooter from Resolution Games, the studio behind Blaston, Demeo , and Ultimechs. It’s out now on SideQuest and you can play in the open beta for free starting today, however we got an advanced look during a trip to the developer’s Stockholm-based studio, which thankfully had a big enough area to host all-out 4v4 matches.

Popular VR-optional tabletop dungeon board game Demeo lets four players dungeon dive together. But, come 2023, players will be able to duke it out amongst one another when the Demeo PVP mode arrives. Demeo developer Resolution Games announced today that the game’s PVP is slated for 2023. The studio is calling it ‘Demeo Battles’ Demeo lets up to four VR or non-VR players dungeon crawl through a tabletop board game where they face off against a range of deadly enemies.

Called ‘Reign of Madness’, the new chapter brings new levels, enemies, a playable character, & more. With several meaty free updates under the game’s belt since release, the studio plans to increase the game’s price from $30 to $40 next month.

Capcom confirms Resident Evil Village: VR Mode will be free DLC for existing owners, launching alongside PSVR 2 next February. Following on from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard , which had optional PSVR support at launch in 2017, Capcom revealed the news on PlayStation Blog. Releasing on February 22, 2023, all you need is a copy of Resident Evil Village (or its Gold Edition) to access the free VR Mode DLC as a separate download on PlayStation Store.

Blaston, the multiplayer VR shooter from Resolution Games, is now free-to-play with today’s update. Joining Bait! and Ultimechs in Resolution’s growing library of free-to-play VR games, Blaston is taking a similar approach to Rocket League ‘s free-to-play switch. Anyone who bought the game before December 15 will receive the Golden Gratitude Pack, which contains two exclusive skins and in-game currency.

Meta Quest Pro now supports shared-space colocation. Colocation means having multiple headsets sharing the same physical play space with the same virtual coordinate space. Facebook showed off an “arena scale” prototype of this in late 2018, but no further development was shown since then. HTC’s Vive Focus 3 has supported colocation since last year , and it’s already being used in VR arcades.

Demeo’s fifth adventure, Reign of Madness, is available now for players on Quest and PC VR. Resolution Games says Reign of Madness is the “fifth and final chapter” in Demeo ‘s Mad Elven King Saga and invites player “ to the town of Ends where they have a chance to close the Rift Bridge and stop Rackarn once and for all.” This fifth adventure for Demeo also adds a new playable character, Uhrak the Barbarian.

First released for Samsung Gear in 2016, Bait! later arrived on the original Oculus Quest as a launch title.
