Today Microsoft revealed the Halo: Recruit experience, launching on October 17th for Windows VR headsets. I got to go hands-on with the experience during an event today at the company’s San Francisco developer hub. Among a number of exciting announcements Microsoft made today, including open pre-orders for their range of VR headsets , the company revealed Halo: Recruit, the first official Halo experience made for VR.

Microsoft is rescuing the beloved VR social network. The Silicon Valley social VR startup that has taken us on a roller coaster ride of emotions over the past months has big news—AltspaceVR has been acquired by Microsoft. Back in July AltspaceVR announced they would be closing down due to lack of funding. Only weeks later , they mysteriously received new support and backing, resuscitating the social VR company back to life.

Microsoft and Samsung formally announced the Odyssey Windows VR headset today, positioning it as the “premium” option among the Windows VR headsets, with a range of features not found on the other headsets, and the top price point. The headset became available for pre-order today and will launch on November 6th (a few weeks after the rest of the Windows VR headsets).

HTC’s new Vive bundle includes the VR adaptation of Bethesda’s hit apocalyptic RPG and a special deal for existing owners. Fallout 4 is easily one of the more highly-anticipated VR titles currently pending release. Hit developer Bethesda worked overtime to bring the entirety of the massive apocalyptic shooter to VR, delivering what is expected to be one of the more fully-fleshed out titles to hit a VR headset.

Microsoft’s special Windows “Mixed Reality” event today saw the unveiling of its latest addition to the VR family, the Samsung HMD Odyssey, and also announced that all VR headsets slated to ship before holiday season are currently in pre-order. With a fresh advert, the company is delineating just how portable and easy to use their new class of VR headsets are in comparison to competing room-scale PC VR headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

We learned back in August that Microsoft was planning to bring content from the iconic Halo series to the Windows “Mixed Reality” VR headsets, and now the company has announced that its coming sooner than expected. Though we’re not expecting a full blown Halo VR game just yet, we will get our first taste of Halo in VR come October 17th, the same day that the first Windows VR headsets are due to launch.

In July AltspaceVR announced that it was closing its doors, stating that a funding deal fell through at the last minute. The following month, the company would go on to release the following statement “We are now in discussions with third parties to develop a sustainable solution to continue development and growth for the future,” Well it looks like we may now have an idea of who one of those third parties were as Microsoft has acquired the popular Social VR platform.

Revealed on the Japanese PlayStation blog , Sony is making a few minor adjustments to new Move controllers, timed with the arrival of the updated PlayStation VR headset. In a surprise update to the PlayStation FAQ, Sony announced that PSVR is getting a hardware refresh that includes integrated audio and new Processor Unit (aka breakout box) that can handle native HDR pass-through.

Worldwide revenues for the augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) market are forecast to increase by 100% or more over each of the next four years, according to the latest update to the Worldwide Semiannual Augmented and Virtual Reality Spending Guide from the International Data Corporation (IDC). Their forecast calls for the combined AR and VR headset market to reach 13.7 million units by the end of the year, and 81.2 million by 2021 with a compound growth rate of 56.1 percent.

Snapchat plans to launch a new art initiative aimed at using augmented reality to feature art installations around the world. A countdown clock magically appeared , and a snippet of javascript underlying the page appears to confirm that the reveal is a collaboration with renowned artist and big Snapchat fan Jeff Koons. The only piece of art on the site is a photo of Central Park in New York City with people sitting about in an open lawn.
