The wait is over. Google has finally confirmed the rollout of Daydream VR to Samsung’s pair of flagship smartphones. Previously announced at Google I/O in May, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus owners received news that Daydream VR support would be coming soon to their device. Now that day has finally come, at least according to a tweet by Google VR.

Researchers from National Taiwan University and Tamkang University are presenting a project at SIGGRAPH this week that shows potential for VR arcades as it recreates realistic weather effects that could enhance immersion. Their system is suspended from the ceiling with modules inside that send down cold air, hot air, wind, and mist. It includes a Vive Tracker on top and its modules can turn in some directions so the environmental effects can be directed straight at a person in VR.

Software developer Shachar “Vice” Weis has described his first impressions of Acers Windows Mixed Reality VR headset dev kit on his blog. According to the latest figures from Valve’s Hardware & Software survey, Rift has reached its highest historical market share on Steam thanks to modest gains amid an ongoing sale. Merge VR , makers of the kid-targeted mobile VR headset Merge Goggles , announced the release of their newest augmented reality project, the Merge Cube. The Cube’s companion app replaces the toy with a variety of augmented reality objects. These objects can be educational, such as a fully articulated and labeled human skull, or just for fun, like an interactive pet alien.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is doing as well as ever, and the company says its PlayStation VR (PSVR) headset is partly to thank for that. 63.3 million PS4 units have now shipped worldwide. The company confirmed that figure in its latest quarterly report. Note that this doesn’t mean 63.3 million units have been sold to consumers, merely sent out to stores.

I’ve said it several times: Sony’s PlayStation VR (PSVR) is my absolutely favorite VR headset on the market right now from a comfort perspective. Clearly, this was designed as a consumer product end-to-end and I love wearing it. However, it has a lot of problems. The screen door effect is noticeably worse than on the Vive or Rift, there is no true 360 or roomscale tracking, and the motion controllers (PS Move) are a poor substitute for Oculus Touch and the Vive wands.

A new controller shown at SIGGRAPH could change shape from rigid to squishy in a demonstration that could lead to more immersive touch sensations in virtual worlds. The research from Cornell University’s Organic Robotics Lab builds on an earlier demonstration that pumped air into a Vive controller for a variety of sensations, including firing a gun and a liquid passing through the grip of the controller.

I try to avoid mechanically explaining games in reviews, but Dino Frontier kind of necessitates it. This town builder from Wayward Sky developer Uber Entertainment doesn’t do a great job of instilling a sense of purpose in its early gameplay. Instead, it hastily drops you into its world and starts barking orders without giving you much reason as to why; there’s nothing to aspire to, no planned path of progression for you to obviously follow.
