The Alien movie franchise is among the most enduring in history, with very entry re-imagining a universe that was conceived almost 40 years ago with the latest, Alien: Covenant , in theatres right now.

The benefit of a tethered, desktop-powered virtual reality setup is that you can get significantly more visual fidelity from a PC with a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card plugged into a power outlet as opposed to the tiny, battery-powered GPU in a phone. But Google is claiming that could change. Google has developed a technology called Seurat that makes it easier to render lifelike, highly detailed 3D environments on a mobile VR headset.

At Google I/O 2017 developer conference this week, the company announced a standalone Daydream VR headset in partnership with Qualcomm , with Lenovo and HTC slated to release commercial versions later this year. The company later shared more details, including what developers can expect in Daydream 2.0. Google also shared a small tidbit: Developers have built “more than 150 apps” for Daydream so far.

Said to be the world’s first VR sim racing helmet, the HelmetVR is perhaps the ultimate in VR sim racing excess, combining a real Arai racing helmet with an Oculus Rift headset. The custom headset comes from FormulaVR, a Netherlands-based, high-end sim rig manufacturer. It is sometimes claimed that VR headsets provide a similar field of view to a racing helmet.
