Sure, you can always hook up your PS4 (or PS5) to a handy nearby TV, but a dedicated gaming monitor comes with extra advantages: It’s easier to set up in a zone built specifically for gaming, and you can make sure that specific features like a certain resolution, refresh rate, or HDR format is supported to get the most out of your new games. They’re also more likely to come with gaming modes, blue light filters, and other handy extras.

Quick note: Yes, the PS4 uses an AMD GPU. However, that doesn’t mean it works best with FreeSync monitors. The PS4 isn’t designed to take advantage of syncing technologies, so it can’t communicate with a monitor in the right ways for FreeSync to make a difference. Don’t make syncing a dealbreaker here.

It may not be as much of an upgrade as some of our other picks, but it is a cost-effective way to add a monitor to your setup. It also comes with BenQ’s eye care software for reducing flicker and automatically adjusting brightness and color temperature, as well as options for a blue light filter — all excellent features for gaming long into the night or reducing annoying eye strain.

It also comes with two HDMI ports, which is another well-placed feature to look for in PS4 gaming monitors because it allows you to link your monitor to another device (like a PC) at the same time for easy switching! It also comes with very high color accuracy. The three HDMI 2.0 ports are also excellent for connecting and switching between a variety of devices.

These are some of the best specs you can hope for in a gaming monitor, but — especially at this size — it’s also a very pricey upgrade. Fortunately, with those inputs and the size of the monitor, it’s a capable TV replacement too, so the high cost may not be quite as important when compared to the cost of a new HDTV.

This 27-inch LG model has a higher price than our first LG pick but also adds some important technology upgrades, including a 3840 x 2160 resolution, HDR10 compatible, and a USB-C port for newer accessories. Display performance also includes a 5ms response time and 60Hz refresh rate, not exactly as impressive but still solid specs for PS4 gaming (and difficult to push higher when supporting a 4k resolution). Black stabilization and dynamic action sync modes are also included. It’s a great pick if you can afford to add a few more high-end specs to your LG monitor and don’t especially care about refresh rate.

Here’s another option for those looking for a specific TV replacement or big-screen upgrade: This 32-inch monitor offers 4k resolution support with a 60Hz refresh rate, ready for the latest and sharpest content, and perfect for when you’re ready to upgrade to the PS5, etc. It also has all the eye care technology of our affordable BenQ pick, including sensors for automatically adjusting the display based on ambient lighting, blue light filter modes, and the other options that make managing eye strain so much easier.
