In development by NetEase Games, NOSTOS is an online RPG due to launch later this year on PC with optional VR support. The game recently had a closed-beta period which gives a good look at how things are shaping up with less than four months before launch. While Zelda: Breath of the Wild inspiration is clear from the outset, the bolted-on VR gameplay speaks to a broader issue of ‘VR-optional’ game design.

There are some exciting stealth-style videogames currently in development for virtual reality (VR) headsets including Espire 1: VR Operative , Phantom: Covert Ops and Budget Cuts 2: Mission Insolvency. The latter of the three is certainly the least serious offering a comical take on running around being some elite operative. When kids in the ‘80s conceptualized “the future” it doubtlessly contained opportunities to run around futuristic gridlines with laser guns in an augmented reality space free of wires or restraints. Flash forward to 2019 and LAVR Tag, a VR version of laser tag just released by MANUVR Entertainment using the Oculus Quest , is giving those ‘80s kids—now adults—a chance to finally live out their dream.
