The creators of Rez Infinite are bringing one of the most legendary titles in gaming to VR for the first-time.
With E3 2018 just around the corner, we’re already being treated to a generous serving of new pre-con reveals and announcements. This morning was particularly exciting however as Sony made its first VR-related announcement of the conference in the form of Tetris Effect for the PSVR.
Developed by Enhance Games, the same team behind breakout hits Rez Infinite & Lumines, Tetris Effect doesn’t shy away from the companies infamously colorful art style. Amazing spectacles of light and sound dance at your successes when you correctly organize your glowing palette of neon blocks. This colorful light show combined with a catchy, modern soundtrack truly makes this a 21st century Tetris experience.
“From deep beneath the ocean to the furthest reaches of outer space and everywhere between, Tetris Effect’s 30-plus stages take players on a wondrous, emotional journey through the universe,” states Enhance in an official release. “The core of the game is still Tetris—one of the most popular puzzle games of all time—but like you’ve never seen it, or heard it, or felt it before.”
Of course the experience would be nothing if it were all style and no substance. Thankfully, Tetris Effect will feature over 30 gorgeous stages, all of which respond visually and audibly to your style of play. Popular game modes such as Marathon, Ultra, and Sprint make their return, as well as new mechanics for original mode like the fresh “Zone” feature. This allows players to actually slow the passage of time, giving them ample opportunity to analyze and adjust their current situation. There’s even a brand spanking new player grading and leveling system to encourage increased difficulty with rewards.
Tetris Effect directly refers to the real-world psychological phenomenon in which those who have spent a significant amount of time with the game begin to visualize Tetrimino blocks throughout their everyday life. A similar effect has been reported by players spending extensive time in the world of Minecraft, who claim to have seen Minecraft blocks during their usual day-to-day.
Tetris Effect will be available on the PS4 & PS4 Pro with dedicated PSVR support fall of this year. More information will be revealed during this years E3 taking place Tuesday, June 12th – June 14th in Los Angeles, California.
