CES 2019: Contact CI Simulates Actual Touch With Motorized Tendons

Last year at CES 2018 one of my favorite demos was when I met with Craig Douglas from Contact CI and tried out his haptic glove dubbed the Maestro. It was still very much a work-in-progress device with exposed wires sticking out the back and no real glove-like casing around it all. Some people probably thought it looked unrefined and unfinished, but it also had a charming steampunk aesthetic that I was totally onboard with. This year it’s starting to look like a nearly finished product.

‘Meta Company Is Insolvent’ As Founder Returns From Trip

Since late last year we’ve been trying to get an update from Meta, the AR company, and its founder Meron Gribetz. A letter filed in a patent infringement lawsuit against Meta seems to say more than Gribetz can right now about the status of the business he started.

Survive: VR Battle Royale Is A Stand Out Port For Mobile VR

We’ve written about the company before ; it’s making an outside-in tracking system that can be fitted to mobile headsets. This offers six degrees of freedom (6DOF) movement for both head and hands. NOLO secured $231,491 to develop the product in a 2017 Kickstarter campaign.

But the HTC Vive adapter powered by DisplayLink seems to have less issues and an easier setup, so this could be a welcome addition to the Rift.

The Biggest VR Releases Of The Week 01/06/19

CES 2019: New Qualcomm Reference Headset Could Hint At Vive Cosmos Specs

At CES 2019 Qualcomm was showing off a new VR headset reference design with dual 2160×2160 LCD displays. Interestingly, the headset was being powered by a smartphone reference device via a USB-C cable. Does that feature remind you of anything? Earlier this week, HTC announced Vive Cosmos at their pre-CES special press event.

How To Use Custom Skins And Colors For Your Blades In Beat Saber

Beat Saber is a massive runaway success in the VR community, due in large part to the customization afforded in the PC version ( sorry PSVR users ). Not only can you download custom songs that users have mapped to create an infinite library of music (we’ve done song request streams where viewers can pick a song for us to play live) but you can also download and install custom blades (or sabers, rather) and colors for those blades as well.
