E3 2018: Rick & Morty Co-Creator Announces ‘Trover Saves The Universe’ For PS VR

Battle eye hole monsters and save your dog in Squanch Games’ first full-length action comedy VR adventure.

Squanch Games, formerly Squanchtendo Games (can’t image what this issue was), has a new VR game on the way that may very well be the oddest experience ever put on a headset.

Available 2019 for the Playstation 4 and Playstation VR, Trover Saves the Universe tells the story of a hero and his unlikely ally on a journey to save their dogs from the evil Glorkon. Confused? Perhaps the description included with the games trailer can help shed some light:

“Wonderful. Your dogs have been dognapped by a beaked lunatic who stuffed them into his eye holes and is using their life essence to destroy the universe. Does that make any sense? You’ve partnered with Trover, a little purple eye hole monster to save them. Find power babies and plug them into his eye holes so that he can absorb their power, track down Glorkon, and save your dogs (and the Universe).”

Ok that was no help. Regardless, the game footage shown in the trailer is dripping with personality in what could be one of the freshest offerings the VR market has seen in some time. Based off the description and images provided, it appears as though Trover Saves the Universe is a third-person platformer of sorts, with the player shadowing over Trover from a god-like perspective. If Squanch’s previous title, Accounting, is anything to go by, it wouldn’t be too surpringing for players to find their new eye hole friend breaking the fourth wall and interacting with them throughout their journey.

Trover Saves the Universe is the brainchild of Justin Roiland, co-creator of the hit animated series Rick & Morty as well as one of the founders of Squanch Games, a studio he created dedicated towards the development of VR experiences. The studio made its debut in 2016 with the release of Accounting for the HTC Vive. The comical VR short was met with widespread praise as fans laughed their way through one of VR’s funniest experiences to date.

This latest venture marks the companies at a full-length VR experience, promising unique gameplay combined with the off-the-wall comedy that one would expect from the mind behind Rick & Morty.

Trover Saves the Universe hits PS VR headsets early 2019. No word on whether you can expect the outrageous adventure on other PC headsets.
