HTC Is Sending 1,000 Vive Trackers To VR Devs For Free

The HTC Vive Tracker presents a lot of new possibilities for VR software, and the company is making sure developers make the most of it. Vive today opened up applications for developers to get their hands on one of 1,000 Tracker units before they launch later in the year. Successful studios will get one of an “initial batch” of Trackers, according to an official blog post.

Oculus Warns Against Using More Than Three Sensors For Rift And Touch

Oculus appears to be listening to recent complaints about tracking stability for its Rift VR headset and Touch controllers, and is offering owners more help today. The VR specialist posted a new blog in which it details ideal set ups for the Oculus sensors that track the headset and controllers. Every Touch owner will have two sensors that should be ideally positioned to best track the user’s position, but they can also buy a third sensor to enable room-scale tracking.

HTC Opens Applications for Free Vive Tracker Dev Kit

HTC announced earlier in January that they’d be giving away 1,000 Vive Trackers to developers. Applications to get your hands on one of the Trackers are now open through February 7th. The new HTC Vive Tracker is a standalone tracking ‘puck’ which uses the same precise Lighthouse tracking system that presently tracks the Vive headset and controllers.

MIT Launches Play Labs VR Accelerator For Students and Alumni

MIT is partnering up with Bayview Labs and early stage VC firm the Seraph Group to launch a new accelerator dedicated to “Playful Technologies” such as VR and AR. The program starts in the summer and will offer mentorship, facilities and funding to selected start-ups looking to enter that space. Applications are now open for this first Play Labs cohort, but only if you’re a MIT-affiliated start-up – meaning that at least one founder has to be an MIT alumni, student, or faculty member.
