Batman: The Arkham Asylum Files is a next-gen board game from Infinite Rabbit Holes that uses augmented reality (AR) technology to immerse players in a mixed reality experience based on the classic DC superhero. Using a smartphone device, players scan physical artifacts to unlock a variety of AR content as they play.
“Dive into the world of Batman and Harley Quinn as you investigate The Arkham Asylum’s most infamous patients with newly reinstated therapist Dr. Harleen Quinzel,” says the company on its Kickstarter. “Explore the world of Batman as you build the streets of Gotham City and make it spring to life through your mobile phone or tablet with amazing augmented reality.”
Batman: The Arkham Asylum Files is composed of three standalone episodes, each of which features its own game boards, set pieces, artifacts, and collectibles. Using the official app, players can bring a 3D Gotham City to life in AR and complete a variety of challenges:
- Episode 1 – Panic In Gotham City: “Dive into the chaotic underbelly of greed and corruption that plague the city.”
- Episode 2 – Gotham City Twisted Skies: “Travel through time as you untangle the deep roots of Gotham City’s storied past.”
- Episode 3 – The Eyes of Gotham City: “Follow a dangerous trailer to uncover the buried secret hiding beneath the surface.”
According to the company, each episode comes with over 100 physical game pieces as well as live-action videos, animations, and original scores. Episode 1 supports up to six players at one time.
Batman: The Arkham Asylum Files is currently being funded on Kickstarter with four days left in the campaign at the time of this writing. The company will begin shipping Episode 1 to early backers this December followed by Episodes 2 and 3 next year.
