Have you tried Virtual Reality yet?

--

I spend at least an hour a day in my VR headset. I am able to do work that clients pay me for while wearing my headset and sitting with a laptop.

It isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world- but if a friend wants to stop by, they can pop on their headset and we can be looking at an avatar of one another and hearing each other’s voices with perfect clarity, unless we moved apart, which would cause the sound to get quieter. Video meetings are a lot more informative than phone calls, because we communicate significant amounts of information through facial expressions.

VR is not prepared to show you people’s facial expressions yet, but it can allow you to differentiate between who is speaking and how far away from them you are standing. Imagine that you can create a stage where the primary person talking is heard and the people in the crowd can still speak up, but if they whisper to their neighbor only the avatars that are sitting around them will hear the voice. You can recreate what it feels like to be the part of a crowd.

I bring up sound because that is one of the dozens of things that are radically different inside of VR. It is nearly impossible for me to describe how it will be for you, because you can make it whatever you want. The most difficult part is learning to navigate the controls.

The only way out is through, and so I am now regularly scheduling time to work in Virtual Reality so that I am more fluent with the controls and understand what is updating as it happens. Right now I am focusing on a headset neutral platform which looks like Mozilla Hubs. We will be hosting our book club for January there- but I will also be holding Virtual Reality Coffee Shop hours where anyone with a headset can join to chat with me and others.

Best part about Hubs- even if you don’t have a VR headset you could still check it out on your computer or cellphone. So come check it out, may help you decide if it is worth it to buy a $299 headset.

I have an Oculus Quest 2.

DM me on Twitter and I’ll send a link to the AVN Coffee shop.

Don’t forget to give us your 👏 !
