SuperWorld has from the very beginning set out to build a better world through augmented reality (AR). While other apps have taken a gaming approach, following on the heels of the breakout success of Pokemon Go, SuperWorld has grounded its AR approach in the real world, specifically in the areas of community support and the environment.
More recently, SuperWorld partnered with the World Bank-supported Disaster Fighters through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). Initially, the project scope was focused on building resources to prepare for and deal with hurricanes in weather-prone areas in the Caribbean through the minting and sale of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with country-specific activation — a novel and potentially powerful way to not only give in the immediate-term, but also ensure that giving continues long after this disaster leaves the headlines.
Last week, when the devastating earthquake occurred in Haiti, however, the two organizations pivoted to engage artists to create NFTs specifically to address that disaster, with food and recovery assistance focused (primarily) on response efforts in the region.
The earthquake in Haiti presents an enormous humanitarian challenge for a country already reeling from previous disasters and political upheavals. Traditional fundraising methods are a great way to help the country climb out of poverty and despair, and many people choose to donate to these global organizations. However, SuperWorld’s approach to the earthquake recovery gives us a glimpse into the future of fundraising and humanitarian support.

How can NFTs help fight disasters in the real world?
SuperWorld is built on top of the real world, and the real world can often be messy. If a SuperWorld customer buys a virtual plot of land, then what happens on the real plot of land is a critical factor in not only determining what to do with that land in AR, but how to support the sustainability of that land in the long term.
What can I do to help?
NFTs specific to Disaster Fighters are available on the NFT Salon at https://nft.superworldapp.com/#/allart. All artists have allotted 40% of their royalties to the cause. Moreover, when the NFT creator sets a royalty percentage, they agree to the same percentage cut in their set wallet(s) from all the sales including the first one. This translates to potentially multiple streams of income designated to the cause as the NFT changes hands.
While NFTs are still relatively new to market and widely debated regarding their value, there is no reason that they cannot be a force for good in the world. SuperWorld is committed to supporting artists in the creation of a virtual world that truly represents the best of what humanity can be.
