Epic Games’ Free 3D Scanning App Looks Pretty Amazing

Bring real objects into the metaverse using this easy-to-use app.

Earlier this week Epic Games launched a limited beta for its new 3D scanning app RealityScan. Using a standard smartphone device, users can easily scan and digitize real-world objects to use in their virtual objects. Similar to RealityCapture, Epic’s 3D photogrammetry software for Windows, RealityScan can be used to easily create hyper-realistic 3D models, minus the need for a beefy PC.

The app uses your smartphone’s camera to capture 2D images and automatically convert them into 3D digital models. All you need to do is open the app and follow the guided AR instructions provided. As you collect data, the app automatically stitches the images together to create a complex 3D model using Epic’s aforementioned RealityCapture photogrammetry technology. The final product can then be uploaded to the popular 3D content platform Sketchfab.

“Capturing real-world assets for digital experiences has traditionally been complicated, technical, and labor-intensive. Now in limited beta, RealityScan takes what people love about RealityCapture—fast and easy 3D scanning—and puts it into the hands of anyone with a smartphone, turning their cameras into an endless source of creativity,” said the company in an official release.

“As more creators and hobbyists embrace 3D photogrammetry, we want to make our technology even more accessible, so anyone can bring ultra-detailed, digital models of real-world objects into their virtual projects. Today marks an exciting new step in that direction.”

Yesterday, Epic opened up access to 10,000 iPhone users via TestFlight. Less than 24 hours later and the beta has already reached max capacity. The company plans on launching the app later this Spring on iOS followed by Android devices later this year. For more information subscribe to the newsletter.
