Apple’s alternate history series receives its own augmented reality tie-in ahead of Season two.
Apple today launched an official AR companion app for its popular Apple TV+ original series For All Mankind, allowing fans of the alternative history drama the chance to learn more about the show’s primary characters ahead of Season Two, which is set to take place 10 years after the events of Season One.
For those unfamiliar with the series, For All Mankind takes place in an alternate timeline during which the USSR beats NASA and the United States to Earth’s moon. The 10-episode series begins with Russian cosmonauts winning the infamous 1960’s “Space Race,” thereby kicking off a series of unprecedented geopolitical events that impact the lives of NASA astronauts, engineers, and their families. For All Mankind: Time Capsule offers fans the chance to learn more about the off-screen lives of the show’s characters—ncluding Danny Stevens (Casey Johnson) and his parents, astronauts Gordo (Michael Dorman), and Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones)—as well as the bizarro world of For All Mankind.
Available free on up-to-date iOS devices, Tim Capsule offers a variety of unique interactions to explore from the comfort of your home. Retro tech enthusiasts, such as myself, will have blast fooling around with several unique pieces of machinery, from the Apple II computer where you can play Crater Quest and read D-mails between Danny and his friend Kelly, to the old slide show projector which projects photos of the Stevens family onto your real-world surroundings via advanced LiDAR technology (iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro MAX, iPad Pro only).
“AR presents a new and exciting opportunity to bring the world of ‘For All Mankind’ literally into the homes of the audience in a way that hasn’t been possible before,” said Ron Moore, creator and executive producer of For All Mankind in an official release.
“I was intrigued from the very beginning at the idea that we could use AR to immerse the audience in the alternate history aspect of the series, explaining and illustrating some of the historical events and technological advances that are implied in the show but which we never had a chance to fully present. Using this technology allows the audience to immerse themselves into the series by interacting with objects, people and media in an impactful and meaningful way that will bring them even closer to world we’ve created.”
For All Mankind: Time Capsule is available free via the App Store. Season 2 is expected to arrive on February 19th on Apple TV+.
