Ultrahaptics Acquires Leap Motion for a Reported $30M

Leap Motion, the pioneer in optical hand-tracking, has been acquired by Ultrahaptics, the enterprise-focused immersive haptics company. According to the Wall Street Journal , Ultrahaptics reportedly acquired Leap Motion for approximately $30 million. The company maintains in a company blog post that the acquisition won’t affect support for the Leap Motion community, and that “new and exciting products” are coming down the bend.

According to a report from Business Insider , earlier this year Apple was on the verge of acquiring Leap Motion, but the deal fell through days before it was expected to close. According to the report, this is the second time in some six years that Apple had conversations with the company about an acquisition. Report: Apple to Announce ARKit Updates at WWDC 2019 Including OS Support for AR Headsets

Apple has been continuously iterating on ARKit , its augmented reality development tool that lets creators make smartphone-based AR experiences. Citing sources familiar with the development of Apple’s new operating systems, the report maintains that ARKit will get a new Swift-only framework for AR and a companion app that lets developers create AR experiences visually. Apple has killed its AR glasses project… maybe. A piece of unexpected news has shaken the XR communities this week: according to a report on Digitimes Taiwan, Apple has abandoned its AR/VR glasses project and all the members of the team have been re-allocated in other teams. This would have happened on May 2019, in the same period when Apple’s senior manager of prototype development Avi Bar-Zeev left the company. AR is still alive, Apple will still release its AR glasses.
