The Ghost Howls’s VR Week Peek (2019.09.22): Oculus working on AR glasses with Luxottica, Apple glasses FOV discovered and much more!

The Ghost Howls

We may know the field of view of Apple AR headset. Of course, since he has not an Apple HMD, the only thing he could obtain was the screen splitting in two on his phone, showing that view that we XR developers know very well. Then, he has also been able to get the nicknames and the fields of view of the headsets that Apple is currently testing! It is now sure that Apple is going to release an AR headset , the questions are just when and what.

Unlike the Lucasfilm AR headset, which uses a smartphone to power it (like the Google Daydream or the Samsung Gear VR does), the company says this concept is a standalone, self-powered headset. The Chinese company is also making a standalone VR headset for Google’s upcoming WorldSense platform and a standalone device for Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mixed Reality platform. San Francisco-based Leap Motion has raised a $50M Series C for their hand- and finger-tracking technology.

My predictions for augmented reality in 2019

The Ghost Howls

Magic Leap. Me, wearing a Magic Leap One. The most important news has been for sure the launch of the Magic Leap One. You may hate or love Magic Leap, but the fact that it has released a product is for sure a great news for all the ecosystem : if after all those investments, that startup failed, it would have had a ripple effect on all the ecosystem, making investors lose trust in augmented reality. Magic Leap One’s Reported Field Of View Leaves A Lot To Be Desired

Now the Magic Leap One , the severely hyped upcoming AR headset that no one can talk about, only has a 40 degree horizontal field of view according to uncovered developer documentation. In a world where the upcoming Leap Motion North Star headset reportedly has a 100-degree FOV and Magic Leap’s received over $2 billion in funding by comparison, 40 degrees horizontally isn’t much of a “leap” forward at all. My Taiwanese XR Chronicles part 1: Cave, zSpace, Brogent hands-on

The Ghost Howls

In Taiwan, all western websites work and so you don’t need to set up a VPN just to use Google. 3D objects had washed out colors , a bit like when you see AR objects through HoloLens 1 and Magic Leap One … they appeared a bit semi-transparent. Even worse, it wasn’t able to track my finger movements well (it was worse than Leap Motion … and Leap Motion doesn’t have worn sensors!).

How VR Can Get To A Hundred Million Headsets By 2024

That’s the problem we’re likely to see with the Google-partnered Lenovo Mirage Solo , with its pointer-only hand controller. Simple pointer-based hand controls from Google and Samsung. This makes Facebook, Apple, Google, Microsoft and Amazon the companies most likely to hire, acquire or build their way to a platform in VR. Microsoft and Google secured numerous manufacturing partners over the years in building out influence over the PC and phone industries.

Who Will Own the Metaverse?

AR Insider

It’s been called the AR Cloud by many, the Magicverse by Magic Leap, the Mirrorworld by Wired, the Cyberverse by Huawei, Planet-scale AR by Niantic and Spatial Computing by academics. The World Map in this world therefore isn’t a 2D street map like we have with Google Maps or Open Street Map, nor is it a 3D map with terrain and building volumes. Both Azure Spatial Anchors and Google Cloud Anchors are leveraging existing strengths in mapping towards the AR Cloud.

HTC Vive announces 6 DOF controllers for Vive Focus and teases hand tracking for Vive Pro

The Ghost Howls

But having seen Google taking a similar route, releasing a faceplate to add 6DOF controller tracking for Mirage Solo , I think that both companies realized that the hardware solution was a better solution at the moment. This is cool because without having to add external hardware like Leap Motion , all Vive Pro users will be able to use their hands inside VR experiences to interact with the VR environment.

Experiential Technology Event Shows How Far VR Has To Go

Above: David Holz, founder of Leap Motion, shows off hand-tracking in VR. The headset used sensors to detect my fingers, using software from Leap Motion. Thanks to all of our efforts, VR is going to leap ahead in the next five years….The And so we agreed that VR still needs patient investors, brand advocates, and passionate platform owners — Oculus and Facebook, Intel, Qualcomm, Apple, Google, and Microsoft — to sustain the investment in VR.

Job Simulator Co-Creator Alex Schwartz On Making Hit VR Games Look Easy

Google purchased the company — the only game studio that the big search company has acquired — and Owlchemy is still doing what it does. If there’s something stuck to table, an apple or whatever, and you can’t grab it, it’s so disappointing to your brain. Google is a lot of support and backing and long-term matching of vision. Schwartz: We’re the first game studio that Google has ever owned. Google fits that perfectly.

We did a project just using Google's hand tracking library. Alan: With Facebook now working on AR, and you've got Magic Leap, and Microsoft's Hololens. And, you know, Magic Leap-- people are going to expect when they walk around holograms, they stay put. Then you've got glasses like the North glasses, which just give you a little heads up display, like your Apple Watch display. But things like midair haptics, with the Ultra Haptics or the Ultra Leap now.
