meta quest 3 tease price

Quest 3 will feature next-gen Qualcomm chipset and cost $499

Breaking news: ahead of The Meta Gaming Showcase, Zuck teased the Quest 3 on Facebook and Instagram.

This is what the Zuck has written:

Introducing Meta Quest 3. The first mainstream headset with high-res color mixed reality. 40% thinner and more comfortable. Better displays and resolution. Next gen Qualcomm chipset with 2x the graphics performance. Our most powerful headset yet. Coming this fall.

Starting at $499, Quest 3 will be the best way to experience mixed and virtual reality in a standalone device. It’ll be compatible with Quest 2’s entire library with more titles coming. More details at our Connect conference on September 27.

This is the post with the video:

From the video we can learn that many of the rumors about the Quest 3 are actually true:

  • The headset has a heavy focus on mixed reality
  • There is a depth sensor that makes sure that passthrough has real depth perception
  • The next-gen XR2 chipset by Qualcomm guarantees 2x the graphical performance, so we can expect much better-looking games
  • The controllers have no ring and no tracking cameras
  • The controllers have true haptics (in this I guess Meta tries to compete better with PSVR 2)

Design-wise, we can also spot that:

On the bottom side of the headset there are the volume controls, the IPD dial, two tracking cameras, and 3 holes that remind me the electrical contacts of the charging pod of the Quest Pro, so I guess this one will have a charging station, too.

On the front, confirmed one tracking and RGB-color camera per eye, plus a depth sensor in the middle.

From a new photo shared on Facebook we can also see on the left side the button to turn it on and a USB-C port

The controllers have this slightly bent shape which makes me think about a thumb pressure sensor to facilitate pinch gestures.

The price of $499 feels right to me. It’s more expensive because this headset has more features than the previous one, but still affordable.

The XR Week Peek (2024.05.21): Google didn’t announce Android XR at I/O, Quest gets Travel Mode, and more!

I have a bit of nausea when writing this roundup because I was playing around with passthrough and created an app that makes you feel like you’re drunk, high, or something like that. I think it’s cool, but my stomach doesn’t share my same enthusiasm… Anyway, I’ll tell you more about it in the upcoming […]
