This 360 Video for 'Total War: Warhammer' is as Close as You'll Get to 'Lord of the Rings' VR

There’s a good chance you’re buying a new game today, and there’s a good chance that’s Overwatch. But maybe Creative Assembly can sway you towards its new release with this VR trailer.

The UK-based studio and publisher SEGA have launched a 360 degree trailer for Total War: Warhammer. It gives you sweeping views of the real-time strategy battles you can expect to take part in in today’s release, which combines the fan-favourite Total War series with Game Workshop’s iconic Warhammer franchise for the first time. If you’ve ever wanted to see one of the iconic battles from The Lord of the Rings films in 360 degrees, this is about as close as you’re going to get for now.

It’s a pretty striking trailer; battlefields are so vast and detailed that you’ll have to watch it more than once to see everything that’s crammed in. The scale of the battles are pretty incredible, as is the diversity in the environments that you visit. It’s not perfect; there’s some pretty obvious stitching split down the middle of the footage, but we’ll welcome any publisher looking towards VR to help market their game. Previously, we’ve also seen Square Enix’s Just Cause 3 advertised in this way.

To watch the trailer in VR, head to the YouTube app on iOS or Android smartphones, find the video, press the Google Cardboard icon and then insert your handset into a mobile-based HMD.

Sadly, Total War: Warhammer itself doesn’t support VR, even though Creative Assembly dabbled with it for its last game, Alien: Isolation. Experimental support for the survival horror game was first shown off in 2014, though official integration has unfortunately never surfaced.

We’ve already seen some successful examples of real-time strategy in VR, the most obvious being Carbon Games’ AirMech Command, so we’d love to see in entry into the Total War series support Rift, Vive or PlayStation VR later down the line. Maybe next time.
