The Worst Deals of Amazon Prime Day 2022 (So Far)

Amazon loves to clear out its stock warehouses under the guise of Prime Day. Here's what to avoid.

It’s Prime Day time! Which means a heaping of crappy deals.

Amazon Prime Day is happening, and it’s taken over the internet. You’re lucky if you’ve been able to avoid it thus far. And while there are a few seriously useful deals making the rounds on Amazon’s bi-annual splay-it-out-and-see-who-buys yard sale, we’d be remiss not to partake in our annual tradition of rounding up some very terrible deals.

Here’s what I found while perusing the Amazon store shelves on the first day of this chaotic shopping venture. If you’re not too keen on shopping at Amazon (you’re justified!), I’ve offered up some alternatives for you to check out.

Stop wearing this awful cologne

I’m of the eastern European variety, and our burly men are known for wearing too much of this Nautica classic cologne. Honestly, if you’re wearing this stuff to mask your musk out in the world, I’m imploring you to stop it, on behalf of all humanity. A stick of Old Spice smells better and will carry you much farther than this bargain bin scent. It’s also probably causing someone a migraine, which is rude and insensitive. Wear better scents!

What year is this? Why are you looking at an antivirus app to help protect you from the internet? You’re better off keeping your computers and software updated to the latest patches. You’re also better off using the money you’d spend here and investing it into a universal password suite like LastPass or 1Password. Even a VPN will help you out a little more than this bloatware.

There are alternatives to Ring security

There are alternatives to Ring security

It’s too bad about Ring, a company that makes quality products but shakes hands with police regularly. Years ago, we explained why you shouldn’t buy Ring products for do-it-yourself home security, and the suggestion still stands. Ring’s cameras also have an uneven track record for security vulnerabilities and other privacy concerns. I’ve reviewed plenty of other brands of security cameras and doorbells that you can check out here at Gizmodo that aren’t as problematic as Amazon’s Ring.

Amazon’s Echo Frames are on a whopping sale for Prime Day. They offer hands-free access to Alexa, and you can even get them tuned to your prescription. But considering all the data that Amazon and Alexa have on you simply through existing, is it something you really want following you around on your face all day?

Prime Day fashion is cheap because it’s fast

I want to take a moment to remind you that many of the house brands that Amazon puts front and center are fast fashion brands. Shein’s carbon footprint, in particular, is egregious because of its “real-time” fashion promises, meaning that the minute something pops up in the ether, Shein increases output. Shein is also known for being mum about its manufacturing practices, isn’t particularly transparent on its supply chain, and has been caught stealing styles from indie artists and designers.

The cordless heating pad isn’t worth it

The cordless heating pad isn’t worth it

Your girl will get cramps every month for the rest of her life until she hits menopause. Until then, I have a heating pad in every room of the house where I lay about because of the pain that inevitably comes each month. I tried to use a wireless, cordless heating pad like this one for a while. But I found that the heat dissipated too quickly, and the battery would peter out before I could sense any real relief.

If you’re trying to heat your abdominal area on the go to help with pain, I’ve found that those Hot Hands hand and toe warmers go a long way—they last up to 8 hours, unlike a battery-operated heat pad.

If you suffer from ear wax backup, I sincerely feel for you, but I don’t think attempting to do it at home on your own is the solution, even if it is $5 off during Prime Day.

Brush your kid’s teeth the old way

I keep seeing this ultrasonic electric toothbrush sprout up. It bills itself as an easier way to clean your kid’s teeth without the emotional headaches. But glancing at the reviews, it’s clear this isn’t an alternative to regular brushing. Everyone knows that a right of passage in parenting is prying a toddler’s mouth open so you can get to those back molars. You can’t cut corners when brushing your teeth!

I can’t back this up with facts. But I believe in my heart of hearts that the key to a happy partnership is separate bathrooms. To that end, the last thing I’d ever invite into my household is a communal bathroom-time book that my husband and I are supposed to fill out each time we use the John. I also can’t believe this was originally $50!

America sucks right now, especially if you’re trans or a woman of color. Let’s not with the giant LED American flag, even if it is 43% off.
