A new job listing points out to the fact that Oculus is planning to integrate eye tracking in its next devices. We don’t know what Oculus will present, but we have some hints.

The Valve Index is for sure the big surprise for virtual reality in this 2019. Maybe with eye tracking and some more screen resolution, it may have been. The Valve Index is already available for pre-order since May, 1st 2019 only on Valve’s website. Shipping of the first batch happens on June, 28th 2019.

I think that this CES is the emblem of the whole 2020, that probably won’t show big disruptions in the XR field, but will make AR and VR grow linearly, exploiting the successes of VR in 2019 (when Quest and Valve Index went sold-out). It may also feature eye tracking, that can be very important for some training applications.

The report shows good news, like the fact that the growth rate of VR in 2020 will be 77% more than 2019 , and that the growth should continue in the next 4 years. The report also highlights that one of the regions where VR may grow more in 2019–2023 is Western Europe.

When you first put it on you’re told to hold the top button, and you feel (and see a visualization of) the lenses moving horizontally to align with your eyes. The eye tracking cameras sense the positions of your pupils and tiny piezoelectric actuators move the lenses into place. And I mean fully. This basic idea isn’t new.

In my opinion , the true error is with the Vive 1 , that will get a price that is higher than the one of all the competitors… and that will cost as much as a Samsung Odyssey, notwithstanding its far lower features. But we also know that when in VR, most people just look forward with their eyes. Vive Focus comes to the west.

Both headsets feature a pentile AMOLED display with 1440×1600 resolution per eye. According to some reviewers, the display may also be the same one made by Samsung. When I visited 7Invensun , the company has made me see a prototypical Vive Focus hacked to add eye tracking inside. Both headsets have configurable IPD.

When Valve released the Valve Index , one of the best headsets of 2019, it also opened the preorders for its VirtualLink adapter , that should have served to connect the Index directly to the graphics card using only one USB C plug. Samsung gets a patent for an AR contact lens.

The Vive Cosmos is the virtual reality superstar of this CES 2019. Will it feature eye tracking? It has not been announced, and since it is a headset for consumers and eye tracking is quite expensive, I think that it won’t be part of this headset. Most probably not. These are all different lines.

The screen is a pentile OLED, featuring 1600×1440 per eye resolution. We are at the same level of Vive Focus or Vive Pro… probably the display is the same made by Samsung. This is the same chip of the Samsung S8 and it is not the latest available for VR: Qualcomm has already released the 845 VR reference design.

I was reading my predictions for 2019 to prepare myself for this article, and to my surprise, I found it incredibly actual. It has not changed that much from when I wrote that article at the beginning of 2019. Maybe with eye-tracking, AI, 5G connection, and a battery that lasts all day. Magic Leap should be very careful.

Another brand I’m very curious about is Samsung : sooner or later, it should announce something, either in VR or in AR. Samsung has always released interesting products (think about the GearVR or the Odyssey), and it would be cool for it to release a standalone headset with mixed reality features. Eye tracking.
