Secretive augmented reality startup Magic Leap is finally taking its first step towards opening up their platform to outside developers. Announced today on the company’s site , developers can now explore Magic Leap’s software development kit and dive into the Creator Portal to find documentation, tutorials, and more. In December, Magic Leap revealed a first look of the headset.

Today Magic Leap has launched the Lumin SDK, the toolkit which allows developers to build AR experiences for Lumin OS, the operating system that powers the Magic Leap One headset. Announced with support for both Unity and Unreal, the Lumin SDK exposes the capabilities of the Magic Leap One headset to developers who can use it to begin building augmented reality experiences for the platform.

Magic Leap Reveals Developer Demo, Confirms NVIDIA TX2 Hardware

Today during Magic Leap’s developer livestream the company offered the first details on the compute hardware that’s built into the device, confirming that an NVIDIA CPU/GPU module, and also showed a brief developer sample demonstrating world meshing and gesture input. Kimball said that the Unity and Unreal engine integrations for Magic Leap do much of the core balancing optimizations (between the available A57 cores and Denver 2 core) for developers already.

Vive Focus has some AR functionalities, but can’t reach the high level of the augmented reality of HoloLens and Magic Leap!

Following a tease this weekend, the secretive augmented reality company today launched its Creator Portal , a suite of resources that will help developers get up and running making AR content for Magic Leap One. Tutorials include introductions to a range of Magic Leap’s new features, including the Remote controller you’ll use to interact with content, with more to come.

At GDC 2018 Magic Leap has announced the release of the Lumin SDK , that is the tools that we should use to develop for this AR glass. and I discovered that the SDK contains a fancy emulator so that you can start exploring Magic Leap development even if you don’t have a device. I first tried looking the FOV of the Unity Camera: when you run the program into the emulator, it immediately becomes 80 , so I thought that the FOV of ML would be 80 degrees.

Brett Bibby, VP of Engineering, confirmed that Unity developers can build Go apps using the exact same workflow that they did for Gear VR, which is something Oculus promised all the way back at its Connect 2018 developer conference. AR is cool when the augmentations are exactly firm in one place and don’t move at all (like in HoloLens), if they move, the magic is broken and the experience becomes less usable. In 2018, there is already a market of hundreds of thousands of VR headset owners willing to spend at least $20 apiece for hours of entertainment with a quality VR title and full “ 6dof ” hand controls.
