‘Doom VFR’ Devs Detail Gameplay, Setting, and Locomotion in New Video

In 2016, Bethesda announced it was working on a Doom VR project, and earlier this year at E3 the company revealed it as Doom VFR. Due to launch in Q4 2017, a Q&A video with the game’s developers shines more light on the kind of gameplay and world that players can expect.

One important thing to note (if you didn’t catch it by now) is that Doom VFR is not a VR adaptation of the franchise’s latest title, Doom (2016). The game is a new Doom experience built from the ground up for VR. In fact, you’ll play a new protagonist—or perhaps a series of them, as your digital consciousness gets transferred between different computer systems and cybernetic entities, the developers reveal.

The video also offers more detail on locomotion, which the devs say is based on teleportation and dashing, ensuring that Doom VFR maintains Doom’s signature breakneck locomotion pace.

Doom VFR is due to launch in Q4 2017 on PSVR and HTC Vive for $30. No Rift support has been announced yet, but the company claims they “plan on supporting as many platforms as we can.”

Praying teleportation doesn’t make Doom VFS (/Doom 3)! Let’s hope ‘dash’ gives us some freedom.

    • OhYeah!

I hate the teleporting mechanic. Feels like i’m glued to the ground, what fun is that?

  • RavnosCC

    HUZZAH!

  • Zachary Scott Dickerson

It looks great! meh to teleportation, already pre-ordered, so I’m hoping it’s still fun. It’s tough to backtrack after getting used to trackpad.

    • NooYawker

Let’s hope they add full motion down the line. But yea I’m going to get this even if it’s just teleport.

  • Adrian Meredith

Looks good but I think they really missed a golden opportunity with the glory kills. It would have been awesome to zoom in and then in slow motion beat the demon to death (a bit like you can do with robo recall)

    • burzum

Exactly my thought. In the original game you could get different glory kills by looking at different parts of the enemy AFAIR. Doing this in VR when the time is slowed down would be awesome. Just grab the head and rip it off instead of just triggering the animation by pressing a button!

I honestly don’t mind using teleportation. It works great as long as there are no delays enforced. Sort of like rec room. I love the game but the 2 second delay before being able to teleport really kills the speed of the game.
Im really looking forward to this game.
I havent pre-ordered because i dont like having my money tied down.

  • Peter Hansen

Hope they include NVidia VRWorks, particularly VR SLI. Would be great if we could finally enjoy some high end graphics in VR!

  • Jean-Sebastien Perron

No full locomotion, no money from me.

    • Adrian

Pretty sure they said they have dash movement – “cardinal”, or directional motion using the thumbpad. Watch below, I timestamped it at at 2:30.

Seriously, all these Bethesda games need to come to Rift.

    • J.C.

Seriously, all those Rift games need to come to Vive.

      • impurekind

I wouldn’t have an issue with that, except most of those Rift games are funded by Oculus directly–so they are basically just like first party games on any other console–rather than being independent third party titles that really should be on all VR platforms.

I want an official Doom II and 3 release in VR. Doom 2016 kinda sucked, there was never any feeling of dread or anticipation about whats around the next corner. Came off more like a Serious Sam game than Doom imo.

    • J.C.

Your opinion on the recent game is definitely in the minority. The original games weren’t scary. Doom3 is the outlier…trying to make a horror game out of an action series.

Doom3 in VR WOULD be neat (and pants-ruiningly scary). Doom II can’t be done in VR without being completely remade; it’s not 3D to begin with.

      • Michael Fuchs

you can play the old dooms in VR already. It has some quirks and looks funny with the sprites, but nonetheless it’s fun

  • Armando Tavares

Came here to say that the Teleportation mechanic ruins games but a few people already beat me to it. Still… it does!!

  • Jason Mercieca

No full trackpad locomotion implementation, only teleport so they getting 0 support from me!
After waiting so much for this game they dont even care for players, please put full locomotion system or you will loose lots of sales starting from me!
Thanks for the consideration to all players ffs!

  • Jason Mercieca

Doom 3 bfg is even better! At least it works great in vr with full locomotion, so players wanting to play doom in vr with full locomotion get doom bfg and vr mod, forget this new doom vr with teleport immersion breaking system….
