Unreal Engine 5 enters early access, gets new tech demo

Epic Games announced today that Unreal Engine 5 is now in early access. The company went into detail about the tool on its blog and outlined the new features that will be available for early access.

Unreal Engine 5 is the latest game engine from Epic Games that a multitude of game developers and filmmakers use to create their art. Those who are interested in signing up for early access and testing out the new engine can access it through the Epic Launcher.

Along with the Early Access announcement, Epic Games released a 15-minute tech demo called Valley of the Ancient, which highlights all of the new, key features of Unreal Engine 5. While Unreal Engine 5 is not production-ready, there are plenty of tools for game developers and enthusiasts to try out and experiment with.

This latest generation completely overhauls the UI and utilizes new features such as Nanite and Lumen. The new UI for the game engine streamlines a significant amount of access to features for developers.

The content browser can now be accessed through hotkeys and editor tabs can be opened and closed right on the side of the screen. Nanite is a “virtualized micropolygon geometry system” which allows an incredible amount of detail in geometric shapes in massive playable spaces. The Lumen feature gives developers the ability to create photorealistic lighting that adapts to geometry and light sources in the engine.

Those who want to get into the nitty-gritty details can read the release notes on the Unreal Engine Site.

New PS5 models are getting their own console covers, but old ones aren’t compatible
A PS5 consxole is opened up, showing its removable hard drive.

The newly redesigned PlayStation 5 is getting its own set of console covers sometime next year. Sony confirms to Digital Trends that several faceplate colors are slated to launch in 2024 but covers for the old PS5 models will not be compatible with the new systems.

One of the PS5's most unique features is its removable faceplates, which allow players to customize their console with new colors and designs. The new PS5 models will evolve that idea with a four-cover panel design that gives the system a slightly different look. Sony is already planning to make those customizable in the near future, according to a statement sent to Digital Trends.

We finally know when Hades II will enter early access
Art for Nemesis in hades 2.

While the announcement is not tied to either of this Thursday's major gaming events, Supergiant Games still used today to reveal exactly when players should expect its highly anticipated roguelike Hades II to enter early access.

Supergiant Games confirmed in a blog post that Hades II will enter early access on both Steam and the Epic Games Store during the second quarter of 2024. More specifically, that means you should expect this initial version of the game to drop sometime between April and June of next year. While Supergiant isn't revealing a specific date yet, it did say that players can also expect a short technical test to be held ahead of that release.
Pricing and system requirement information for Hades II are unknown at this time, although Supergiant did lay out its plans for early access. It says that the early access release of Hades II will be a version that "is far enough along that player feedback won't mostly consist of stuff we already know isn't there yet, but isn't so far along that it's too late in development for us to act on the feedback we receive." Once the game is out there in early access, major updates will consistently drop to add story, character, and gameplay content before the 1.0 launch brings the game over the finish line while featuring the conclusion to the game's story.
Hades II will enter early access on PC during the second quarter of 2024. Supergiant does not know how long it will keep the game in early access, but players should expect the 1.0 version of the game to launch across PC and consoles at the same time whenever that happens.
