Hover Junkers' Single Player Campaign Mixes Oregon Trail With VR

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Hover Junkers, the HTC Vive launch title from Stress Level Zero. Despite releasing over a year ago, the developer is hard at work on a big update for the game that adds a single-player campaign, and it looks very promising.

While Hover Junkers’ traditional multiplayer gameplay is all about intense shootouts with friends, the single-player mode is more influenced by randomized adventure games like Oregon Trail. Players choose their craft, a hovering vehicle made of scraps that represents their room scale play area, and then set out on a long journey across the game’s vast deserts to reach the town of New Eden.

Along the way, players will encounter different sites and obstacles that they’ll have to approach in different ways. In the above trailer, for example, we see them encounter a checkpoint, which they can either buy their way past or ram into. Different choices will have different outcomes, but you’ll need to make sure you’re keeping your passengers alive and stocking up on resources to make sure you’ll make it to the end.

There’s still a lot to learn about the campaign, but right now it looks pretty promising even if there isn’t much of the game’s traditional gunplay in sight. Hopefully there will still be some shoot outs, but this new direction has us intrigued all the same. We’re hoping for randomized elements that keep us coming back for multiple playthroughs, just like Schell Games’ Orion Trail did for Gear VR back in the day.

Either way, the campaign is being added on top of an already enjoyable game for free, so there’s little cause for concern. Stress Level Zero is expecting to launch the single-player campaign within the next few weeks.
