Grab Your Proton Pack: Ghostbusters Is Getting A Pokemon GO! Style AR Game

4:33 Creative Lab announces Ghostbusters World, a Pokemon Go! style game for iOS and Android.

Right on the heels of Google’s recent ARCore update, comes an announcement by 4:33 Creative Labs: Ghostbusters World is a new AR game that will have you answering the call when there’s something strange in your neighborhood.

The Ghostbusters World app – which will be available on iOS and Android devices – has you strapping on the famous Proton Pack to bust some of the more popular ghouls from the movies, cartoons and comic books. All of this in a Pokemon GO! style gameplay that promises to bring the Ghostbusters Universe to life using AR as you explore your city, town or neighborhood.

As a Ghostbuster, you will have access to all of the same tools that Venkman, Spengler, Holtzmann, Yates and Tolan had when they were defending New York City from poltergeists, and specters such as a Proton Pack, a Neutrona Wand, and an Ecto Containment Unit. The only thing you’ll need to supply is a smartphone and an (optional) Ghostbusters uniform.

Ghostbusters World is an opportunity for 4:33 Creative Labs to partner with Sony Pictures Entertainment along with Ghost Corps — the entity that handles Ghostbusters properties.

In the official Ghostbusters World press release, Ivan Reitman, Director & Producer of the 1984 and 1989 Ghostbusters films said, “The Ghostbusters Universe is rich in characters, and Ghostbusters World is the perfect medium to get to know these characters in a whole new dimension.”

During an interview with VRScout, Lowell Eggleston, a manager at The Comic Depot in Upstate New York, as well as a bonafide Ghostbusters fan since he first saw the original movies, talked about AR being used to bring Ghostbusters to life in the real-world, “I think it’s wonderful that we can step into the shoes of some of our favorite heroes from the films and cartoons,” Eggleston continues, “who hasn’t ever wanted to strap on a Proton Pack and pal around with Slimer?”

Back in 2016, The Void — a company specializing in warehouse-sized VR experiences — created Ghostbusters: Dimension – a full sensory, immersive VR experience that uses the physical world to bring a layer of realism to a VR experience. The Void calls this Hyper-Reality – and it was greeted with huge success. It even spawned a successful follow up Hyper-Reality experience called, Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire.

But will an AR Ghostbusters experience yield the same results?

“As long as developers keep the core ideals and gameplay around the theme that we all know and love – then yeah,” said Eggleston. “If it goes over well with the fans, it absolutely opens the door for new everything.”

At this time there isn’t a release date for Ghostbusters World, but 4:33 Creative Labs has said they will announce a date during next months Game Developers Conference.

In the meantime, you just need to be ready – you can’t be afraid of no ghosts!
