Google and Queen Bring Bohemian Rhapsody to VR

Experience the future of music videos with The Bohemian Rhapsody Experience.

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, maybe you have heard of it? Before steaming music, MP3s, CDs and MTV, back in 1975 a little band called Queen shot a video for Bohemian Rhapsody.

On its 40th anniversary Rolling Stone Magazine said, “Its influence cannot be overstated, practically inventing the music video seven years before MTV went on the air.” While not the first music video, it was only after the huge success of Bohemian Rhapsody that it became a regular practice for artists to create videos for single releases.

The Bohemian Rhapsody Experience collaboration with Google, original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, as well as Enosis VR may be doing just that same thing for virtual reality music videos. The team went all out combining 2D original music video footage with 3D motion capture animation, creating a 3D 360 degree experience with spatialized audio. (Unlike normal stereo, spatialized audio changes as you move your head around the way it does in real life, adding to the emersion of the experience.)

Headphones, a swivel chair and your Google Cardboard headset are an absolute requirement. Having said that, the experience does have a 2D pan around mode, but you’ll probably want the full immersive experience to enjoy this one. I got literal goosebumps when one of the motion captured dancers came up close to my face. You’ll probably want to go through the VR experience more than once, since you’ll likely have missed something as different action unfolds all around you. Do a spin around to get a feel for the spatialized audio and how it really puts a new dimension on the whole dance.

The Bohemian Rhapsody Experience is available on the Google Play store now with an iOS version “coming soon” to the App Store.
