Artists Spread Inspirational Political Messages Through Geo-Located AR Art

Augmented art application ‘4th Wall’ launches location-specific, collaborative art exhibition to inspire “thoughtful dialogue.”

Originally released February of this year, Nancy Baker Cahill’s art app, 4th Wall, gives users the opportunity to take a closer look at some of the artists captivating pieces of VR artwork from the comfort of their home via AR technology. Now the technology-savvy creator is expanding her platform to help spread thought-provoking political messages across the globe via a geo-located, collaborative AR art exhibit.

“The President Wilson 1928” by Debra Scacco

Open now to all users via the 4th Wall app, Coordinates is an ongoing art exhibit featuring an ever-growing list of influential, sometimes controversial, pieces of art tied to specific GPS locations. Found in areas throughout the United States, Mexico, and Egypt, with more locales to come, these eye-opening artworks have been placed in specific locations relevant to their message in terms of history, culture, or political significance.

For example, Debra Scacco’s piece, “The President Wilson, 1928,” features a sound clip of President Wilson during an interview from the Ellis Island Oral History Project and can be accessed from the Staten Island Ferry while near the Statue of Liberty. Beatriz Cortez’s sculpture, Tzolk’in, on the other hand, honors the legacy of Claudia Gómez González who was shot by border control while crossing the Rio Grande in May earlier this year. An AR version of the memorial is now available for viewing over the famous river located in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
