Rumor: Star Wars – The High Republic VR Game Currently In Development

Lucasfilm’s new publishing campaign will supposedly include a VR tie-in set roughly 200 years before The Phantom Menace.

This past February, Lucasfilm announced the launch of an ambitious new publishing campaign that promises to pull back the veil on a previously unexplored period of the Star Wars universe. Kicking off later this year with a series of adult and young adult novels, children’s books, and comics from major players like Disney, Del Rey, and Marvel, Star Wars: The High Republic takes place 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

During this time, the Galactic Republic finds itself in a “Golden Age” of sorts as it continues its expansion throughout the Outer Rim, uncovering new mysteries along with way. The Jedi, currently at the height of their power, serve as galactic peacekeepers, traveling among the stars to dispense justice and assist those in need as a universal feeling of hope leads to the exploration of new systems.

“Star Wars: The High Republic features the Jedi as we’ve always wanted to see them — as true guardians of peace and justice,” says Lucasfilm Publishing Creative Director Michael Siglain in an official release. “This is a hopeful, optimistic time when the Jedi and the Galactic Republic are at their height. But of course, into this glorious new era something wicked this way comes. This initiative will give readers young and old a new corner of the galaxy to explore through rich, meaningful stories. Plus, readers will learn what scares the Jedi.”

According to a report by Cinelinx, several “independent sources” have confirmed that this upcoming collection of Star Wars media will include a brand new VR game set during The High Republic era:

“In the lead up to the reveal event, there’d been a number of rumors pointing to Project Luminous being more of a multi-media endeavor with other tie-ins beyond the books and comics,” states Jordan Maison of Cinelinx. “One of the things mentioned, and something I had heard as well beforehand, was that a possible video game tie-in.”

“There was no word on what type of video game it would be, nor who would be developing it. Since The High Republic reveal event the other week, there’s been no mention of a game, but I DID manage to hear a sliver of new information about it. I’ve heard from a couple independent sources there is, in fact, a High Republic video game in the works and that it’s a VR project.”

Obviously, the official High Republic press release makes no mention of a potential video game tie-in, but it wouldn’t be at all surprising to learn that Disney is hiding a little something extra up its sleeve. With the releases of both Trials on Tatooine and Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, developers like ILMxLAB have proven the historic sci-fi franchises viability within the VR format, whether it be wielding an imperial blaster or harnessing the power of a lightsaber.

Star Wars: The High Republic will begin with Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, launching later this August at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. This adult novel epic will kick-start what Lucasfilm refers to as “a massive interconnected story that’s told across various formats by various publishers.”
