'Lantern' Is VR's Beautiful Answer to 'Flower' Launching Next Week

We’ve often wondered what thatgamecompany’s incredible experience, Journey, might look like in VR. Next week, though, you’ll get a taste of what the developer’s previous release, Flower, might be like in headsets.

No, Flower isn’t coming to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, but Italy-based developer Storm in a Teacup’s Lantern is. In this new title, you’ll take control of a sky lantern, steering it across beautiful Asian-inspired landscapes as you bring color to a land that’s drowned in blacks and grays. You’ll make your way to a princess that feels unloved and unhappy, looking to quite literally light up her life.

You can check out a trailer for the game below. Its art style is particularly striking, reminding us of other upcoming VR titles like Into the Black.

It looks like a pretty peaceful piece of VR entertainment. In Flower, you swept through vast fields, blooming flowers as you went. If Lantern can deliver that same kind of whimsical charm then it’s sure to be worth your while. You play with a standard gamepad controller and it doesn’t sound like any sort of position-tracked controls will be making it in. Support for standard monitors is also included, though VR support frees up the game’s camera, allowing you to look around the world as you soar through it.

Its the developer’s first VR title, having previously released first-person adventure title N.E.R.O.: Nothing Ever Remains Obscure earlier in the year.

Lantern is launching on Steam on November 15th, though an official price hasn’t yet been announced. We’ve reached out to publisher 1C Company to see if the game could also make its way to PlayStation VR later down the line.
