Pokemon Go Adds Gen 3 Monsters And Weather-Based Gameplay

Pokemon Go’s library of virtual pocket monsters is about to get some welcome new additions.

A year and a half on from the augmented reality app’s first launch and third-generation Pokemon are finally joining in on the fun. The rather brilliant live-action trailer below confirms some of the new critters that will join the fray, but a blog also names Treecko, Torchic and, most importantly, Mudkip (I think Mudkip is just the best). These Pokemon first appeared in the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire games, that explored the Hoenn region. Now you’ll find them in your parent’s kitchen.

Interestingly, the next update is also adding a major new feature; weather-based gameplay. The app will sync up with local weather reports to both change the display in your app and switch up which Pokemon you find in the game. If it’s raining, for example, you’ll be more likely to find Mudkip (!). It’s a pretty nice idea and a good way to keep players logged in come rain or shine.

The weather will also affect the power of attacks, with Fire Pokemon fairing better on sunny days, for example. We’re hoping this side of the update doesn’t unbalance the game at all; otherwise players in Iceland might need to say goodbye to their Charizards.

The update is set to go live later this week. No word on that ARKit update just yet, either.
