Dean Hall's Out of Ammo Is Getting A Sequel This Month

Remember Out of Ammo? It was a VR game released seemingly out of nowhere by RocketWerkz, the New Zealand-based developer founded by Day-Z creator Dean Hall. Well, just like that, its sequel is coming out of nowhere too.

Out of Ammo: Death Drive arrives later this month on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive — just under a year since the full launch of the original game — and we’ve got the trailer for it below. The game is described as a hybrid experience in which players spend time building bases but then can also embody the units they command as they mount a defense against hordes of zombies.  According to a Steam listing it looks like the developers are ditching co-op modes this time around.

Based on the trailer, it’s got lightsabers. Don’t tell ILMxLAB about that bit, okay?

It’s interesting to see Out of Ammo getting a sequel given that Hall himself described the first game as “very unprofitable” late last year. Talking about the financial realities of VR content development, Hall noted that the game had actually exceeded the studio’s expectations. “We are comfortable with this, and approached it as such. We expected to loose [sic] money and we had the funding internally to handle this. Consider then that Out of Ammo has sold unusually well compared to many other VR games.”

Is the studio hoping to make a profit with the release of its next game?

Out of Ammo: Death Drive doesn’t have a final release date or price, but look for it to release sometime within the next few weeks.
