PS5 VR Is 'Completely New Format', Dev Kits 'About To Go Out' - Sony

Hot off the back of announcing a new PS5 VR headset, Sony Interactive Entertainment also confirmed that developer kits for the device will be shipping out soon.

SIE CEO Jim Ryan confirmed as much in an interview with GQ, simply stating: “Dev kits are about to go out.” The company has not yet confirmed any specific specs for the headset but, in its announcement, did confirm it will feature improved resolution, field of view and tracking along with new VR controllers.

Ryan declined to comment on developer partners and exactly who would be getting a developer kit. It’s a safe bet, though, that Sony’s VR-specialist first-party studios like Blood & Truth developer Sony London would have access to it.

Elsewhere, Ryan reiterated that PS5 VR will connect to the console with a single cord and that the device introduces a “completely new format” for PS5. That suggests that the kit might not be named PSVR 2 and that it could have some deeper integration with the console not seen with the original PS5.

“More importantly, we see [VR] as something beyond this coming iteration that really could be really big and really important,” Ryan said when asked why Sony was making a new headset. “We like to innovate; we think our community likes us to innovate. I’d turn around the question and say, “Why not?” For us, it’s a very logical step to take. We’re very excited by it and we think that people who are going to make VR games for our new VR system are going to be very excited too.”

PS5’s VR solution won’t arrive in 2021, but hopefully we could get a first glimpse at the device later this year. We’ll keep you updated with all the latest.
