According to a patent released by Sony Interactive Entertainment recently, the company seems to be working on an all-new VR motion controller that is very similar to the Valve Index, manufactured and created by Valve. The patent mostly talks about a controller device that will have the input mechanism of a home-use game machine.

It will be able to detect the hand movement of the users. In addition to that, this brand new kit will also come with multiple sensor units to detect the users’ fingers. The kit will be so advanced that it will have the power to identify the contact or proximity of a finger.

The preliminary design of this motion controller looks a lot like the usual VR controllers available to users in the market. Users can fit their hands into straps and then grip the device by wrapping their fingers around its back.

Moreover, the designs demonstrate the existence of a strap that could enable players to ensure that the controller remains in their hands while letting go of it at the same time. In this manner, users can make the controller stimulate grabbing virtual objects, just like the controllers of the Valve Index do.

That said, Sony seems not to have decided on a concrete way of tracking fingers according to the patent. It is expected that the sensor units might be configured by an infrared sensor or an electrostatic sensor. However, these are just assumptions made according to the patent and do not indicate the final designs of the new motion controller.

Furthermore, Sony is also currently incorporating some very exciting features into the next DualShock controller that is meant for PS5. This includes triggers that help in applying resistance to squeezing as well as enhanced haptic feedback. It is hoped that all these features will also be implemented in the new PSVR controller.

That said, PS5 hits this holiday season, and we do not expect PSVR 2 to be launched at the same time. So, we might have to wait for some to check out the features of this new motion controller!
