Fight for your life in this fan-made VR game based on the popular South Korean survival drama.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few weeks, odds are you’ve heard about Netflix’s latest global sensation, Squid Game. In this South Korean survival drama, a group of 456 individuals, each of whome suffering from financial difficulties, participate in a series of diabolical competitions based on classic childrens games for the chance to win a staggering ₩45.6 billion ($38.7 million USD).
The nine-episode series premiered last month to rave reviews from both fans as well as critics, establishing itself as yet another instant classic for the streaming giant. The show has become so popular, in fact, that a handful of super fans have begun developing their own VR experience based on the first game featured in the series: “Red Light, Green Light.”
In this classic childrens game, one player takes on the role of the spotlight—or “it” player—and stands at the end of a field with their back to the other players positioned at the opposite end. When the “it” player says “green light,” the competing players are allowed to move across the field. Everytime the “it” player says “red light” and turns around, the other players must freeze in their current position. The first person to scross the line or tag the “it” player wins. In order to run, swing your Touch controllers back and forth in the air. Just make sure to freeze when you hear “red light.” Those who’re caught moving during the red light phase will face the wrath of the games watchman, an unsettling childlike mannaquine.
