You’ll need a PSVR headset, PS4 Dualshock 4 controller or Move controllers, and PS4 Camera in order to play.
In a new FAQ provided by Sony this past week, the company confirmed that the PlayStation VR will be backward compatible with the upcoming PlayStation 5, allowing players access to a wide variety of VR games on their next-gen consoles; though it won’t be cheap.
Long story short, those looking to access VR on the PlayStation 5 will not only need the PlayStation VR headset, but the PS4 Camera and a Dualshock 4 controller or the Move controllers; all of which sold separately from the PS5.
“Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5,” states Sony in the updated FAQ. “Please note that playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PS VR headset, DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller(s), and PS Camera (for PS4), which are sold separately from the PS5 console. Also, the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5. You’ll need to use the PS Camera (for PS4), and the PS Camera adaptor (no purchase required), to use PS VR on PS5.”
For those who already own the above-mentioned accessories, this transition should prove to be no issue. For everyone else, however, this means spending roughly $103 -$143 on accessories in addition to the headset itself.
Thankfully, Sony offers several money-saving bundles that include everything one would need to get VR up-and-running on the PS5, though it’s still more expensive than having to buy the headset alone. Still, it’s nice to know players will have access to a stellar lineup of VR titles at launch.
