This 3D NES Emulator Looks Fantastic In VR

The original Super Mario Bros. has never looked this good.

If you aren’t familiar with the concept of a video game emulator, this magical piece of software (or hardware) allows a computer system, also called the “host,” to operate like a particular video game platform. By using these emulators to run the ROM file of a specific game, users can access the original game experience as if they were playing it on its intended platform.

This software has allowed a whole new generation of gamers to experience the early days of classic gaming, whether it be the unforgettable offerings of the original Metroid, or the brutal treatment by the hands of Ninja Gaiden. One such emulator, the 3DNes V3, takes the concept a step further, converting classic 2D NES games into full 3D experiences that look especially fantastic while in VR.

In a post made on Reddit earlier this week, the developer claims to have successfully ported over 40 classic NES games into 3D with a high quality standard. These updated renditions feature new layers of depth that add immensely to the visual quality of each title shown.

While in VR, users are encouraged to lean in, move around, and inspect every angle of the game as they play. Developed in Unity, each pixel is rendered with volume, in turn adding a sense of depth and layer to the original 2D composition.

Seeing as many of these titles feature side-scrolling gameplay, the world is generated as the player progresses further through the game, with each section of the level appearing out of thin air.

According to the post, 3DNes was at one point available for download via Steam. However, due to licensing issues, it has since been removed. It’s unclear whether or not the software will ever find its was back to the popular distribution patform, but seeing as how New Retro Arcade: Neon features basic emulation support and has been going strong for two and a half years, there’s always hope.

For now, users can grab a copy of 3DNes over on itch.io for $14.99 USD. The software is currently compatible with Oculus & SteamVR. For more information, check out the programs official subreddit, r/3DNes.
