Guinness World Records Officially Recognizes 36-Hour VR Marathon

We’ve heard of a number of attempts to set a world record by spending an incredibly long stretch of time in VR. It turns out, though, that Jack McNee’s attempt earlier this year is the one officially recognized by Guinness World Records.

The 36 hours, two minutes and 16 seconds McNee spent inside Tilt Brush in April of this year is the official record. The choice to spend that time in Google’s Tilt Brush is an interesting one because McNee could constantly change the scenery at a whim and shape the world around. McNee could take a 10-minute break every hour, and could accumulate those breaks for a longer step away from VR.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone attempt spending this amount of time wearing a VR headset. It is recommended that with traditional screens you attempt to follow the 20-20-20 rule where you take a break every 20 minutes to look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. That might be a challenge while wearing a VR headset like the HTC Vive, which doesn’t have a flip-up screen, but taking those frequent breaks might help avoid eye strain.

Update: Information added about breaks during the record attempt.
