Snapchat Spooky AR Experiences from Lens Studio Creators Get You Ready for Halloween

Homemade Halloween costumes that exhibit the maker's creativity are always better than off-the-shelf versions. It turns out that the same is true with virtual costumers.

In the spirit of the season, Snapchat is featuring six augmented reality costumes, created by its Lens Studio community, available via Lens Explorer on Friday. Additionally, the app will spotlight one of these Lenses in the camera carousel each day leading up to Halloween.

Dubbed Project Spectre by Snap, perhaps the most notable of the group is Alie Jackson's Horror Collage. Snap frequently curates Jackson's work, which has been previously featured in promotions for John Wick and Nike's Jordan Brand.

The rest of the selected six include Medusa Head by Anrick Bregman, Pierced by Clara Bacou, Puppet Master by Sava Nozin, Fire Bending by Gia Saputo, and Soul Selector by Aaron Clifford.

You can access the Lenses yourself by searching for their titles via Lens Explorer in the app, or click the titles above to access their Snapcodes (which we've embedded below for your convenience).

It's an impressive selection, but, if these don't satiate your need to frighten others, there's a good chance there's another effect available through Lens Explorer.

"Snapchat now powers billions of daily AR experiences, with each of our daily active users interacting with augmented reality nearly 30 times every day on average. This high level of engagement with augmented reality has made Snapchat an appealing platform for creators and developers to build and distribute new augmented reality experiences," said Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap, in prepared remarks accompanying the company's third-quarter financial results.

"To date, our community has created over 600,000 Lenses in Lens Studio, with top-performing Community Lenses reaching billions of views on Snapchat. In just a few years, we have built a thriving augmented reality ecosystem where users, creators, and businesses all benefit from using our platform and tools."

While Lens Studio appears to have gained a sustained community for creating snackable AR effects and branded experiences, Snap can't rest on its laurels. Facebook has its own AR creators platform called Spark AR, which is now available for publishing camera effects to Facebook and Instagram.

It might be scary to have someone follow your every move, but, in this case, users win, as there is no shortage of reality-warping effects for fun photo and video creation.
