YouTube In Search Of North American Channels For VR Creator Lab 2019

Applications are now open for the VR Creator Lab’s hands-on boot camp and mentorship program to create even more immersive content on YouTube.

If you’ve watched any professional-level VR content on YouTube recently, chances are you’ve enjoyed a project from one of our talented VR Creator Lab participants. VRScout has been partnering with YouTube since 2017 to help educate YouTube channels on how to develop VR content using the latest tools and techniques in VR180 and 360-degree video production.

By teaming up with organizations and personalities such as Big Cat Rescue, NASA  JPL, Cartoon Connect, Merve Özkaynak, and Los Polinesios, YouTube has helped foster the development of a massive catalog of award-winning VR180 and 360-degree content that pushes the boundaries of immersive filmmaking.

Most recently, we turned our attention to London where we lead a cohort of incredible European YouTube creators eager to dive into the next generation of VR storytelling. Participants included everyone from the celebrated premium documentary channel BBC Earth, to the famed chef and restaurateur, Jamie Oliver

In September, we’ll return to our Los Angeles roots to help a fresh new group of North America-based creators get their hands dirty in the world of VR180 production. Over the course of the three-day boot camp, selected participants will receive in-depth training from a team of VR professionals at YouTube Space LA. The fun will include hands-on workshops, coaching, funding, professional filmmaking equipment, and a talented community of immersive creators.

Over the course of three months, the cohort will create original and experimental VR180 and behind-the-scenes videos. We’ll be with the creators every step of the process, providing additional mentorship and assistance via regular check-ins.

Those looking to participate in the program must own a YouTube channel (no consumer brands) with at least 100,000 subscribers and zero current copyright or terms of service strikes. All participants must be at least 18 years old and have access to a laptop and high-speed bandwidth for video conferencing.

If you don’t meet the required subscriber count, but want to participate anyway, channels with at least 10,000 subscribers are free to apply for our special one-day workshop which takes place directly after the three-day boot camp. This day-long workshop condenses three days-worth of information into one big session, allowing smaller—but equally-hungry—creators the chance to get in on the action.

Check out YouTube’s brand new VR Creator Lab page to learn more about VR180 and 360-degree video production and how you can get more involved in the program.

Applications for the 2019 YouTube VR Creator Lab are open now until August 6th; the three-day boot camp will take place September 17th – 19th at YouTube’s LA Space.
